MANILA, Philippines — The andas, or carriage, of Jesus Nazareno, which set out for the Traslacion at 4:41 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, was about to enter Arlegui Street when it was stopped by devotees wanting to get closer to the religious image.

It was past noon when people started crowding the street, spilling out to Quezon Boulevard and Quezon Bridge. While some devotees attempted to get close to the andas, most of them observed from a short distance. “Sana umusad na (I hope it will move),” one said.

People cheered at 12:39 p.m. as the carriage moved a bit, but the celebration did not last long as more devotees climbed the andas to embrace or at least touch the tip of the cross of Jesus Nazareno hanging outside the carriage.

The $1.5-million air traffic management system upgrade began at 12:31 a.m. on Sept. 30 and was completed by 2:47 a.m. Airport operations resumed to normal by 3:01 a.m.

The andas finally entered Arlegui St. at 12:43 p.m., prompting devotees to celebrate by shouting “Viva, viva, viva.” The carriage was last seen at Castillejos Street at 2:27 p.m., based on a Facebook post by the Manila DRRM Office.

Last year, the rope that was used to pull the andas of Jesus Nazareno snapped along the corner of Arlegui Street and Quezon Boulevard.
