Originally a children’s song, “Sampung Mga Daliri” is reimagined as a heartrending folk pop track, now holding the feelings of a love lost and the pain and difficulty of letting go

Whoever imagined just counting could be this heartbreaking? If you’ve ever sung “Sampung Mga Daliri” as a kid, this may be the time to revisit the nursery rhyme. Bicolana singer-songwriter Dwta just released her version of the song—now grown-up and 10 times more painful—in collaboration with SB19’s Justin.

“Sampung Mga Daliri” now talks of the realization that the one you once loved is no longer yours to hold. The children’s song, now reimagined as a heartrending folk pop track now holds the feelings of a love lost and the pain and difficulty of letting go.

They first performed the song at the 10th Wish Music Awards last Jan. 19, of which both artists were nominees.

Justin grounds Dwta’s dreamy and ethereal vocals, as they both mirror and respond to each other’s sentiments in each line and verse. Their voices come together in a calming, lullaby-like melody, a contrast to the sting of its heartbreaking lyrics.

In their pre-release TikTok live, Dwta shares that she had written the first version of the song in 2023, but it wasn’t finalized until recently. The collaboration came to light after the “Padaba Taka” singer met labelmate Justin at a gig.

AirportWatch.PH spokesperson Ren delos Santos said in a statement, “Instead of delivering on its promise to modernize the airport, the DOTr (Department of Transportation) has implemented what feels like a cash grab.”

“Sabi ko no’n, gawa tayo content or song. Naghanap ako agad sa baul ko ng mga kanta, something na babagay sa voice naming dalawa,” Dwta shared during the live. Her first draft of “Sampung Mga Daliri,” she said, was created after being inspired by a friend’s film class, during which they had talked about giving alternate endings or stories to children’s songs or nursery rhymes.

While the song is based on her personal experience, Dwta also revealed that she had updated the lyrics to this final, released version of “Sampung Mga Daliri.”

Asked about the collaboration, the “Surreal” hitmaker added that Dwta’s music style, especially the arrangement made for “Sampung Mga Daliri” aligned with the type of music he wanted to create. “Personally, gusto ko sa mga songs ko ’yong ganyan, ’yong parang lullaby. So pasok,” Justin said. Dwta had sent two other songs for the collaboration, but both artists felt “Sampung Mga Daliri” was the best fit.

The song allowed both artists to explore a more vulnerable side to their craft, resulting in a deeply moving and evocative piece.

Dwta has also been producing a series of live performances called “dwta series: Magka-Ibigan,” featuring earlier released tracks such as “Santigwar,” “Padaba Taka,” and “‘Di Naman.” The series follows the journey of a relationship from interest, longing, friendship, confession, rejection, and now, with “Sampung Mga Daliri,” separation and letting go.

Aside from a music videoqueen777, the two artists also teased an upcoming mini-series revolving around the song.
